NMSU GK12 DISSECT Program

I am currently supported by a fellowship from the NSF GK12 Program. My particular fellowship is funded through the New Mexico State University Computer Science Department to promote "computational thinking" in grade school classrooms. I am working with Mrs. Rachel Knight. In 2011-2012, I worked with Rachel's 7th and 8th grade Agriscience class. This year, we continue our teaching partnership, but at a new school and new grade level, and with new classes: I will be working with her Biology, Environmental Science, and Introduction to Agriculture classes.

I will be updating this page with summaries of the activities that I develop for the class.

Module 04 - FFA Creed: Scoring & variability

I completed a fun module with the agriscience class this week. The class has been working on public speaking this month. As part of their preparation, they are all required to memorize and recite a paragraph from the FFA Creed. A bunch of the students also got to try their hand at competing in the district FFA Creed Recitation contests earlier this week. They are going to be evaluated and graded on their recitation of the creed in class at the end of this week, so I constructed an activity that would give them more practice with the creed and also give them some insight into the scoring process.

Module objectives:
  1. Provide students with an opportunity to practice the FFA Creed and learn more about scoring before they recited it themselves for a grade (addresses student needs & curriculum of class).
  2. Give students an opportunity to generate, collect, analyze, graph, and interpret data (incorporates aspects of computational thinking, also reinforces basic math benchmarks).

Module 03: Food webs & footprints

I was in class several times over the past two weeks to deliver my third module to the agriscience class. This module focused on food webs and how dietary choices affect the environment. See the full summary of Module 03: Food webs & footprints here.

Here are a few photos of the module in action:
